Rollason continued to aspire to a career in broadcasting, and while still teaching did screen tests for BBC Wales and BBC South, but she was unsuccessful in both auditions. She admitted it was a challenge to portray a character six years her junior who was still attending school. She presented sports bulletins for BBC Breakfast News and BBC News, and in 1996 was named as Sports Presenter of the Year. It was while she was teaching PE that she met her future husband, a fellow teacher named John Rollason. Rollason was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, and fought a two-year battle with the disease. A 1998 documentary, Hope for Helen, followed her treatment, and won her much public support for her courage. Sharni Vinson appeared in Home and Away in 2001 and 2003, as guest characters named Tonya and Summer respectively. Born in London, Rollason studied to become a PE teacher before entering radio broadcasting in 1980. Cassie used to be fiercely independent and headstrong, really knowing how to hold her own when it came to the boys of the Bay. She debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 18 March 2005. Soon after, Vinson signed up to play Cassie. She worked initially at Henry Beaufort School in Winchester, Hampshire, before moving to Essex, where she was a supply teacher. Later that year, the BBC established an award in her memory which is presented at the annual Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony. In 1980, she took a holiday job as a volunteer presenter at Basildon Community Radio after seeing an advertisement in Basildon town centre and offering her services to them. Cassie departed screens on 2 April 2008, when she left to go travelling. Thankfully, this meek little mouse was chased away ages ago. Vinson also visited females with the virus as part of the research process. As well as covering mainstream events such as the 1996 Summer Olympics, she became a champion of disability sports, helping to raise its profile and change its public and media perception. After many problems in her childhood she was forced to live with her grandmother, Joy (Elaine Lee) after her mother abandoned her.

Vinson originally auditioned for the role of Martha MacKenzie ( Jodi Gordon ), but later secured the role of Cassie. After directing sport related content for Channel 4, where she helped to bring American football to British television, she anchored coverage of the 1987 World Student Games and 1988 Summer Olympics. She continued to work throughout her illness, and shortly before her death was awarded an MBE in the 1999 Birthday Honours. Those closest to Cassie are ashamed of her when they discover the truth. Sure, it can be lots of fun, but it can also create a whole lot of trouble. She may have more energy than a legion of Duracell bunnies and be a natural when it comes to making friends and influencing people, but Cassie has a wild and wanton streak. Her work on Grandstand proved popular with viewers, and led to a number of other sports presenting roles for Rollason throughout the 1990s. The serial decided to portray as domestic abuse through the two characters. Cassie is given a foster family when Sally Fletcher ( Kate Ritchie ) and Flynn Saunders ( Joel McIlroy ) take her into their home. However, her characterisation is out of conjunction with the usual victims of such crimes. Her monster of an uncle sexually abused her and it took years upon years for her to come to terms with it all. Vinson has received one Logie Award nomination for her portrayal of Cassie. Vinson was twenty one at the time, while Cassie was portrayed as a fifteen-year-old student. A cancer charity was also founded in her name. In 2007, Vinson decided to leave Home and Away because of personal commitments. Cassie was seen pushing those closest to her away, while Macca continued his abuse. Do not be fooled by her heavenly smile: Cassie is anything but angelic.
